Visit one of the most beautiful parts of Slovenia in the heart of Julian Alps where two glacier lakes are set. Bled and Bohinj lakes are extremely popular among Slovenians as well among foreigners who are visting them from all around the world.
Is this because of many legends, among which the most famous about Črtomir and Bogomila, was written by our greatest poet France Prešeren, or is it only because of natural beauties that surrounds this area. The best idea is to find it out on your own!
But before you come and see it on your own we would like to show and describe you the area. Visit can start either from the destination itself (either from Bled or Bohinj) where you enjoy in long relaxing holidays, or you can come for a day tour from all around Slovenia and even Austria, Italy or Croatia.
In Bohinj you should have a stop on the lakeside next to the church of st. John the Baptist and on the old stone bridge, from where you can admire wonderful view to the lake and surrounding peaks of Julian Alps. From there you can explore one of the most scenic waterfalls in Slovenia – Savica, but beware some 350 stairs are to the top. And one of the most interesting things to do is to take the cable car to the mount Vogel (1535m) from where you can see almost all Julian Alps and of course – Bohinj lake from above. On the top you can have a walk on the mountain or visit of an alpine hut for typical alpine meal with some cottage cheese.
Between Bohinj and Bled is some half an hour drive and probably the best thing to is to drive around lake Bled and visit of the Bled castle, originating from 1011, from where you have glorious view of the lake with small island in the middle.
After this, oarsmans with pletna boats can take you to the tiny island in the middle of the lake, where the church of st. Mary, originally from 8-9c., is set. On the island you should not forget to ring the bell of wishes (and make a wish) and discover legends told about the island and the suroundings, especialy about the one about Slavic goddess Živa.
From the island you can admire Vila Bled, that used to be Alpine residence of Yugoslavian Royal family Karadjordjević and later Yugoslavian president Tito. Today it is a 4* hotel with 5ha big park surrounding it.
While visiting Bled you should not miss tasting delicious Kremšnita.
